GUIDE TO WINNING $5,000 TEF GRANT IN 2022
WHAT IS THE TONY ELUMELU FOUNDATION ENTREPRENEURSHIP PROGRAMME?
TEF was established in 2010, The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) is African private-sector-led philanthropy in Africa championing entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs across the continent. The Foundation’s long-term investment in empowering African entrepreneurs is emblematic of Tony Elumelu’s philosophy of Africapitalism, which positions Africa’s private sector, and most importantly entrepreneurs, as the catalyst for the social and economic development of the continent. TEF Entrepreneurship Programme, is a 10-year, $100 million commitment to identify, train mentor, and fund 10,000 entrepreneurs, capable of changing the face of business across Africa.
The programme started in 2014 and 2022 is the 8th cohort/cycle of the programme that grants 1000 successful African entrepreneurs initial seed capital funding of $5,000, to upscale their business. The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme is open to Africans from all 54 African countries with scalable business ideas or a business that has been operational for no more than 3 years.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
The Tony Elumelu Foundation Entrepreneurship Programme is open to Africans from all 54 African countries with scalable business ideas or a business that has been operational for no more than 5 years. Applicants must be 18 years of age and above or considered above the age of minors in their country.
The programme is not open to research institutions, faith-based organisations, value-adding trading companies, government contractors and businesses not located in Africa.
Businesses must not adversely affect the environment, lives and property. Existing businesses or business ideas must be for-profit, and must be the original work of those making the submission.
PROGRAMME STAGES:
Selection of the applicants will take place after applicants successfully complete all the stages of the training and successfully take part in the pitch.
The program stages are as follows:
- Application Phase
- Training & Mentorship Phase
- Business Plan Submission Phase
- Pitching Phase
- Seed Capital Phase
APPLICATION PHASE
Once applications are submitted applicants will be placed in either of these categories below:
PREPARATORY: This means you do not have the skillset needed to start a business. You will go through the general free training on TEFConnect. You will, however, not be eligible for mentorship or seed capital but can reapply the next year.
START-UP/ BEGINNER: This means you are a starter according to the business start-up profiling. You will go through the beginner training modules and you will have access to world-class mentors during the programme.
INNOVATIOR/ INTERMEDIATE: This means that you have been profiled to be an intermediate entrepreneur. You have a good potential to be a successful entrepreneur. You will go through the Intermediate training modules and you will have access to world-class mentors during the programme.
DISRUPTOR/ ADVANCED: This means that you are identified to be natural or a seasoned entrepreneur. You will go through the advanced training modules and you will have access to world-class mentors during the programme.
TRAINING STAGE
The TEF training content called the Start-up enterprise toolkit is a bespoke programme tailored to support young and dynamic entrepreneurs through their business journey with a focus on the successful execution of their business plans and ideas.
The training phase of the programme will last for twelve (12) weeks. However, some intervention programmes could be modified to last for 4 weeks or 6 weeks.
SEED CAPITAL PHASE (FUNDING)
The funds will be wired directly into the entrepreneur’s business bank account – personal accounts are not permissible. For those in UBA countries, the business account must be opened with UBA.
Seed capital is disbursed to entrepreneurs who have received the training and mentorship and meet certain participatory guidelines and objectives. Register on TEFConnect for more information, www.tefconnect.net
All shortlisted participants are required to open business accounts in your registered business name. TEF DO NOT pay seed capital into individual or corporate accounts.

ASSESSMENT
Personality Assessment: you are required to answer some personality questions during the application. Get the personality assessment here.
Cognitive Assessment: Also TEF will assess you on some important questions to ensure you are able to read, write and manage a business very well. Get the related cognitive assessment and equip yourself before facing the battle
